About the museum
Bloxham Village Museum was set up in 1980 by Mrs Yvonne Huntriss and celebrates the history of the village of Bloxham, near Banbury. It occupies the ground floor of the old courthouse beside St Mary's Church. The building is owned by the Bloxham Feoffees, the trustees of the village's ancient charities, and stands on the site of an older town house where the manorial courts were held from at least 1602. The courts dealt mainly with transfers of manorial property and continued to meet there until 1925.
The courthouse was rebuilt in 1689 and restored several times since then. A 14th-century window and doorway from an earlier building were saved and can now be seen on the east and north sides.
The museum collects items connected with Bloxham, especially from the time when the village was a self-supporting community. A permanent exhibition tells the story of the village, with a video loop on its development from the earliest times, and every year a new summer exhibition is mounted, such as 'Bloxham in 50 Objects'. The museum is a charity run entirely by volunteers and it sells books on the village's history.
