About the museum
Boxted airfield in Essex was a Second World War base for the United States Army Air Forces, home to about 3,000 military personnel and a great influence on the small village of Langham nearby. Units that flew from the field included the 56th and 354th Fighter Groups and the 386th Bombardment Group, and a rescue squadron was also based there.
The museum, run by the Boxted Airfield Historical Group, held its grand opening in May 2011 and tells the story of the airfield and the people who served there. A uniforms collection shows clothing and documents of members of the US 9th Air Force and of two British women who served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. The B-26 Marauder hall contains a recreated cockpit and a fuselage section with a tail gunner's position, and an early Link Trainer flight simulator is displayed in a building in the car park.
On open days there are illustrated talks about the history of the airfield and demonstrations of the Link Trainer. The group also invites families of veterans to get in touch.
