About the museum
Brentwood Museum is housed in the lodge of a Victorian cemetery on Lorne Road, Warley. The lodge was once the home of the cemetery sexton, his wife and their six children. The cemetery no longer takes new burials and is managed as a nature reserve.
The Brentwood Museum Society was founded in 1977 and acquired the lodge in 1985. The museum opened to the public in 1989 and has opened regularly in the summer since then. It was registered with the Museums and Galleries Commission in 1993 and gained full accreditation in 2008.
The collection aims to bring the past to life through everyday objects from earlier generations. It contains hundreds of household items that show daily life in a commuter town, as well as reminders of Brentwood's military and industrial past and items from local schools and hospitals. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, and the society also organises a talks programme from October to April and welcomes group visits by arrangement.
