About the museum
The Bromyard and District Local History Society was founded in 1966 and gradually built up a collection of local records, books, maps, newspapers and above all historic photographs of the town and the villages around it. The collection is especially valued by people researching their family history.
The Society bought its present building at 5 Sherford Street in 1999 and converted it with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The Local and Family History Centre opened to the public on 1 May 2003. It is run entirely by volunteers and receives no regular support from the local authority.
The ground floor holds a reception area with a shop and an exhibition room where themed displays of local photographs and items from the archive change from year to year. Upstairs, reached by a passenger lift, are a research room with computers, viewers and reference books and the archive itself. Volunteers help visitors find material and use the online catalogue.
