About the museum
The Brontë Homeland Interpretative Centre is housed in the old schoolhouse beside Drumballyroney Church, in the hills near Rathfriland in County Down. Patrick Brontë, the father of Charlotte, Emily and Anne, was born into a farming family in this area in 1777. He taught at Drumballyroney school as a young man before he went on to study at Cambridge.
The exhibition in the schoolhouse tells the story of his early life and of the Brontë family's roots, with displays on the Brontë family in the former church and school buildings. The centre is the start of the Brontë Homeland Drive, a signposted route of about ten miles through the countryside around Rathfriland. It passes places linked to Patrick Brontë, such as the Knockiveagh picnic site, the site of Glascar School where he taught in the 1790s, and the house of his mother's family.
Patrick Brontë's birthplace at Emdale is cared for by the Brontë Homeland Trust and lies on a separate route. The tourism listing notes that some stops on the drive are not currently open to visitors.
