About the museum
The Canvey Island Transport Museum occupies a bus garage built in 1934 for the Canvey and District Motor Transport Company. Several similar companies used it before it passed to the Eastern National Omnibus Company, which kept it in use until 1978. The Castle Point Transport Museum Society then took on the lease of the depot and later bought the freehold.
Since then the society has built up a collection of more than thirty preserved commercial vehicles. They include work by chassis makers such as AEC, Bedford, Bristol, Guy and Leyland and by body builders such as Eastern Coach Works, Duple, Harrington and Massey Brothers. Some vehicles are fully restored, while others are being rebuilt by their owners or by groups of members in the workshops and pit area, so visitors can see traditional skills such as wood-frame construction and aluminium panel beating.
The museum also has a working model railway layout, a range of other transport items and a shop selling die-cast models, souvenirs and transport-related merchandise. It is run entirely by volunteers.
