About the museum

Carnforth station opened in 1846 on the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway and grew into a busy junction where the main line meets routes to Barrow-in-Furness and to Skipton and Leeds. The station was modernised in the late 1930s. The main-line platforms were taken out of use in the 1970s, but the station is still served by local trains.

In February 1945 parts of David Lean’s film Brief Encounter were shot here, and the station buildings have been linked with the film ever since. A trust formed in 1996 began to restore the site, and the visitor centre and refreshment room opened in October 2003.

The centre tells the story of how the film was made and of the people involved, including its director, and shows the film in its own small cinema, the Kinema. Further displays cover the history of the station and of Carnforth as a railway and industrial town, and a room of railway memorabilia and photographs. The centre was re-organised after earlier management ended, and a steering group now oversees its running.
