About the museum
Chiseldon Local History Group was formed in the 1980s after a Landscape History Course run by the Workers' Educational Association in the village. Over the years the group built up a large archive of photographs, documents and objects that needed somewhere to be shown. In 2003 Chiseldon Parish Council suggested using a redundant chapel in Butts Road, one of two old chapels in the village cemetery, as a village museum, and the group rented it from the council.
The museum opened in August 2004 and was opened officially by Phil Harding, the archaeologist known from the television series Time Team. It is staffed by volunteer stewards of the history group, who are on duty on Saturday afternoons between April and September. The other chapel is used by the Parish Council.
The museum holds a wide range of photographs and objects relating to the village, and its displays are renewed every year over the winter. Some exhibits are permanent, such as the timeline and a replica of an Iron Age cauldron. For 2026 the group revamped its sections on the Chiseldon Cauldrons, School Days and Pubs of the Parish, and added a new series of exhibits on medicine in the past.
