About the museum

Christchurch Mansion is a Tudor brick mansion in Christchurch Park, near the centre of Ipswich. It stands on the site of the Holy Trinity Priory, which was founded in the 12th century and closed under Henry VIII. In 1545 the London merchant Paul Withypoll bought the site, and his son Edmund began building the house in 1547. Later owners included the Devereux family, Viscounts Hereford, who changed the frontage and gardens, and the Fonnereau family, who bought the house and estate in 1735.

The estate was put up for sale in 1892, and in 1894 Felix Cobbold, a member of the syndicate that had bought it, gave the mansion to the town on condition that the surrounding parkland was also kept for the public. The house was restored and developed as a museum and art gallery, and it is now run by Colchester + Ipswich Museums.

The rooms are furnished in styles from the Tudor period to the Victorian era, from the kitchen and servants' quarters to the Georgian saloon and the Victorian wing. The Suffolk Artists Gallery holds paintings by Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable, and the Wolsey Art Gallery shows temporary exhibitions. Other displays include toys, dolls' houses, ceramics and glass, and musical instruments.
