About the museum
Coalisland Museum & Heritage Centre tells the story of the industrial past of Coalisland and the surrounding area in east Tyrone. Its permanent exhibition, The Coalisland Experience, was first opened in 1993 by Mary Robinson, then President of Ireland, in the town's Cornmill. It has since moved to its present home, and it is managed by Coalisland & District Development Association.
The exhibition covers the local coal mines, factories, the canal, spade mills and brickworks. Four audio guides that accompany it are available online.
The present building was once the Coalisland Weaving Company, which operated for more than a century before it closed in 1978. The museum keeps many of the original machines, including the large engine room, and it tells the story of the workers and of how the factory changed over the years. A visit takes the form of a guided tour in two parts, one on the local industrial heritage and one on the weaving factory.
