About the museum

Cogges lies beside the River Windrush near Witney. The manor was held in 1086 by Wadard, who is named in the Domesday Book, and the present manor house dates from the 13th century. Over the centuries the estate passed through royal hands and then to private owners, including the wool merchant William Blake in the 17th century.

The two large barns and the farm buildings were built in the 18th century and are now listed. The Mawle family lived in the manor and farmed the land until 1974. After that the site was opened to the public as a farm museum, which is recorded as founded in 1977.

Today visitors can see the manor house, which holds objects and photographs from earlier owners and a working Victorian kitchen range, and a working farm with goats, sheep, ponies, poultry and small animals. The grounds also include a walled garden, an orchard and a children's play area on the site of the old moat, and the historic barns are used for events.
