About the museum
Cumbernauld Museum is part of the Culture North Lanarkshire museum service and is housed inside Cumbernauld Library in the town centre. It tells the story of Cumbernauld and the surrounding area from prehistory and the Roman occupation, through the 19th century, to the creation of the New Town in the 1960s.
The displays use maps, photographs, artefacts and audio-visual material. Themes include local industry, wartime experiences, community life, sport and leisure.
Among the objects is a finely woven blanket from the 1880s by the master weaver William Smith of Smithyends, and a gold locket given in 1885 to Alex Bryce for saving a child from the River Luggie.
