About the museum
Dacorum Heritage is the accredited local museum of the Borough of Dacorum in Hertfordshire, run by the Dacorum Heritage Trust, a registered charity. The Trust was founded in 1993 and has kept the borough's collections since 1994 in a converted fire station in Berkhamsted, where they remain. It also provides heritage services to Dacorum Borough Council.
The museum has no permanent public galleries and works as a museum store, so visits are by appointment only. The collection runs to well over 100,000 objects, covering the area's history from the Neolithic period, about 6,000 years ago, to the present day. It includes paintings, photographs, documents, archaeology, textiles and everyday objects of local and social history, and in some cases visitors can see items up close or handle them.
The Trust offers behind-the-scenes tours of the store for small groups, showing objects such as a Neolithic axe-head, samplers from the 1880s and a penny-farthing wheel, together with some of the conservation work that looks after the collection. It also runs online exhibitions and shows displays in local libraries.
