About the museum
The Heritage Centre is part of Dewsbury Minster, the Church of All Saints, which is run by Dewsbury Team Parish. The Minster stands at an ancient crossing of the River Calder where, according to tradition, Paulinus, the first Bishop of York, preached in AD 627.
A wooden church probably stood here first, and about 200 years later a large Anglo-Saxon stone cross was put up to commemorate his visit. In 1992 Saxon stonework from about 980 was identified in the worship area, which suggests a large Anglo-Saxon church. All Saints regained Minster status in 1993, the first church to receive that title since the Reformation. The Grade II* listed building has been altered many times over about 1,300 years.
The Heritage Centre explains this history through displays and shows remains of the Saxon cross from about AD 850, which are among the earliest and rarest stone carvings of their kind. A Christian Life exhibition is in the Upper Hall. Visitors can explore on their own with a tour leaflet or take a heritage tour, and the Refectory serves refreshments.
