About the museum
Earlswood Village Museum was founded in 1977 by members of the Earlswood Historical Society, who set out to research the history of the village and collect objects and photographs. Local people donated items of interest, and the first museum was set up in a small room in Earlswood Village Hall under the care of a dedicated curator, who built up the collection until 1991.
As the collection grew, more space was needed. With grants from the village hall trustees, the district council, two parish councils and a local charity, a new extension was built and opened in May 2013. The museum is still based in the village hall, which itself has a long history: it began as a Gospel Hall in Birmingham and was rebuilt in Earlswood in the 1920s, opening on 20 November 1926.
The museum aims to preserve the local history of the area and to give young and old the chance to learn about their heritage. It holds old photographs, maps and information that are useful for family history research. For 2026 it has displays on the first hundred years of the village hall, on local wildlife and on a Second World War fire service despatch rider. Schools and groups can arrange visits, and schools can borrow items for history projects. The museum is run entirely by volunteers.
