East Cowes Heritage Centre

About the museum

East Cowes Heritage Centre was founded in 1992 by members of the Isle of Wight Society to preserve and display the history of East Cowes and Whippingham. It is run by volunteer stewards and is part of the East Cowes Heritage Organisation. The centre occupies the former International Stores, a Victorian grocer and tea merchant’s shop at 8 Clarence Road.

The permanent exhibition follows the history of East Cowes from 1783 with three-dimensional models of the town, other models, maps, photographs and text. Temporary exhibitions look at subjects in more depth, and the window display changes every few weeks, often to mark local or national anniversaries. The centre also keeps an archive of over a hundred files on more than 80 subjects for research, and it welcomes gifts of archive material and objects, especially about East Cowes.
