About the museum

Euston has been the home of the Dukes of Grafton for more than 350 years. The village appears in the Domesday Book of 1087, and a manor house stood here in the 15th century. In 1666 the house was bought by Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington, Secretary of State to the newly restored Charles II, who rebuilt it as a grand residence in the French style. In 1672 his daughter and heiress Isabella married Henry FitzRoy, the son of Charles II, who became the first Duke of Grafton, and since then the estate has been the family’s seat.

The hall was remodelled around 1750 for the 2nd Duke by the architect Matthew Brettingham, and in 1902 a serious fire destroyed the south and west wings, although the art collection and many family treasures were saved. Since 2012 the 12th Duke of Grafton has been restoring the hall and grounds.

The surrounding landscape was shaped by famous designers. John Evelyn laid out the Pleasure Grounds from 1671, including a long promenade and the Basin, a lake south of the hall. Later William Kent and Capability Brown extended them, and Brown designed the waterways between 1767 and the 1780s. A Palladian temple designed by William Kent in 1746 as a banqueting house stands on the estate. Visitors can see the hall on guided tours, together with the gardens, the church of St Genevieve and the watermill, on open days.
