About the museum
The Feering and Kelvedon Local History Museum was formed in 1975 and shares a historic building with Kelvedon library. The building dates from about 1630 and was founded as a school by Thomas Aylett, who left money for it in his will in 1637. It became the British School in 1846, gained an infants' room in 1886, and stopped being a school in 1944. The library arrived in 1970 and the museum five years later.
The museum is run by a small committee and 15 to 20 volunteer stewards and is supported by the two parish councils and by donations. Its main room shows village life in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the village pump, Kelvedon's volunteer fire brigade, schools and wartime. The Sage Room holds archaeology from the two villages, from Stone Age tools to Roman finds from the settlement of Canonium.
The Lobby Room covers transport, such as the Crab and Winkle railway line and local bus firms. An indexed archive of photographs, parish records and papers can be consulted under supervision.
