About the museum
The Fusilier Museum London is housed in the headquarters of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers inside the Tower of London. The regiment was raised at the Tower in 1685 to guard the guns and gunpowder of the Royal Arsenal, and it takes its name from the flintlock musket, the fusil, that its soldiers carried. It returned to the Tower in 1880, and by 1949 it had a private museum there and had made the Tower its permanent home.
The museum opened to the public on 9 November 1962. A Heritage Lottery Fund project reopened the galleries in April 2011 and gave visitors free access to the museum for the first time, and later projects added education programmes, volunteers, a First World War centenary programme and a new collection store.
The collection covers the regiment’s history from 1685 to the present, with uniforms, medals, photographs, letters and war diaries. Visitors reach the museum through the Tower of London.
