About the museum
The Gilbert & George Centre was founded in 2017 by the artists Gilbert & George to provide a permanent exhibition space for their legacy. It opened to the public on 1 April 2023 in Spitalfields in London's East End, near the artists' home and studio. In keeping with their "Art for All" idea, admission is free.
The building was originally a brewery, built in the early 19th century. SIRS Architects converted it, keeping many original features, and the project received a RIBA London Award in 2025. Visitors enter through a courtyard to the reception, a film room and several galleries, including the Main Gallery, the Beam Gallery and the Lower Gallery.
Gilbert and George met at Saint Martin's School of Art in 1967 and have worked together as one artist ever since. They became known for the "Living Sculpture" performance of 1969 and for almost 3,000 pictures made since 1971. The Centre shows changing displays of their pictures and postcard art, and offers free highlight tours every Saturday.
