About the museum
Glan-yr-afon opened in December 2018 in the former Riverside Market building in the centre of Haverfordwest. The project cost about 3.4 million pounds and was a partnership between Pembrokeshire County Council and the National Library of Wales. Further funding came from the Welsh Government, the Wolfson Foundation, the Foyle Foundation and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.
The building brings several services under one roof: a public library with a children's area, a gallery, a visitor information point and a coffee shop beside the river. The gallery was planned as a venue of national significance, where treasures from the national collections can be seen in the county.
The gallery opened with an exhibition marking the centenary of the painter Kyffin Williams. Since then it has shown a series of changing exhibitions drawn from the National Library of Wales, including a loan from the National Gallery in London in 2022. A permanent display, Pembrokeshire: Past and Present, presents the history, culture and landscape of the county through works by artists and writers such as Waldo Williams, Geoff Charles, David A. Light, Ray Howard Jones and Elizabeth Haines.
