About the museum
The Guildhall is one of the oldest buildings in Carlisle. Its timber frame was probably raised between 1396 and 1407, possibly after a fire in 1391 destroyed many buildings in the city. The L-shaped building has two wings, on Fisher Street and Greenmarket, with different roof structures. Tree-ring dating of the roof timbers shows that they belong to the original construction. It is a Grade I listed building.
The ground floor has been used for trading since at least the sixteenth century and is still occupied by a private business. The current entrance and staircase to the upper floors are fairly modern, and the upper floors were probably first reached from Fisher Street.
The museum on the upper floors opened in 1978 and shows the history of the city’s trade guilds. Enquiries about the museum are handled by Tullie House in Carlisle. The council states that the museum is currently closed until further notice.
