About the museum
Halesworth and District Museum occupies the Victorian railway station buildings in Halesworth, Suffolk. It was set up in 1984 and has been run by volunteers who have collected and researched the history and archaeology of the town and its surroundings for more than thirty years.
The displays include local archaeological finds, among them the Wissett and Bramfield hoards of Bronze Age axe heads and the Blythburgh Iron Age gold coin hoard, as well as material on geology and on the de Argenteins, the Lords of Halesworth Manor. A Local History Room offers research material and historic photographs, and activity trays are provided for children.
The museum is closed from the end of September 2026 until mid-March 2027 while major repairs to the building fabric are carried out to deal with damp. The museum and the Local History Room will be refurbished and redecorated, with new furniture and storage, and the displays will be reinstated for a relaunch in March 2027.
