About the museum
Halstead Heritage Museum belongs to the Halstead and District Local History Society, which was formed in 1976. The society opened its first museum at 23 Parsonage Street in September 1980, and the museum has moved several times since. It was housed in the Brewery Chapel in Adams Court from 1985 to 2006, then in Mill House on The Causeway from April 2009.
The present home is behind The Queen’s Hall at Chipping Hill, where the museum was opened on 3 February 2018 by the Mayor of Halstead. It is run by a team of volunteers and is open on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from February to November.
The displays present the history of the town and its surroundings through objects and an extensive photograph collection, some of which goes back to the 1800s. Only a small part of the collection can be shown at any time, so the exhibits are changed often and there are occasional themed exhibitions. Research visits can be arranged by appointment, and local history books published by the society are sold at the museum.
