About the museum

The Harris exists because of a bequest. In 1877 the Preston lawyer Edmund Robert Harris left £300,000 to Preston Corporation in memory of his father, the Reverend Robert Harris, to pay for a free library, museum and art gallery. Preston bought the collections of an earlier literary society and opened a public library and museum in temporary premises in 1879, and in 1880 an act of Parliament allowed the town to provide a site for the new building.

Construction of the purpose-built building began in 1882 and it opened in 1893. Designed by the local architect James Hibbert in a neo-classical style, it is listed Grade I. A pediment sculpture, The School of Athens, and casts of classical friezes, including reproductions of the Parthenon frieze, show its classical influences, and the central hall rises through four storeys to a lantern tower. A motto on the building promises that the mental riches gained here will stay with the visitor always.

The collections include ceramics, glass, art, photographs, metalwork and ivory, local history, oral history and Preston street songs, along with a large collection of fashion and textiles. This includes the Horrockses Fashions collection, which the museum describes as the world's largest museum collection of Horrockses dresses. Alongside the galleries the building houses libraries, a café, a shop and rooms for events.
