Haverhill and District Local History Centre

About the museum

The Haverhill Local History Group was formed in 1974 by people who felt that researching the history of their town was worthwhile. Its aim is to collect, house, preserve and interpret the history of Haverhill and the surrounding district, and to give the public access to its local archive.

The group runs the Haverhill History Centre, which is based inside Haverhill Arts Centre on the High Street. The group is an accredited museum and has been supported in this by the Association for Suffolk Museums.

The centre holds more than 8,000 photographs of Haverhill and district from about 1860, copies of the local newspaper the Echo on microfilm from 1888 to 1980, local publications and resources for family historians. A changing programme of exhibitions is shown through the year, and the group publishes books on aspects of the town’s history. It also holds monthly meetings with local history talks from September to May.
