About the museum
The museum tells the story of the volunteer soldiers of Herefordshire: the Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers, the Herefordshire Regiment, formed in 1908, and the Herefordshire Light Infantry. It also holds items about other county forces, such as the 36th Regiment of Foot, the Militia, the Volunteer Training Corps, the Home Guard and cadet units, and later the Light Infantry and The Rifles.
The museum is a registered museum and registered charity, run entirely by volunteers and funded only by donations. It operates under the Ministry of Defence museums policy and the Army Museum Ogilby Trust, works closely with the county’s museum and library service and holds Arts Council England Accreditation. Many of the objects were donated, some were bought and some were found in the forgotten corners of the regiment’s old drill halls.
The displays are in the Army Reserve Centre, known as Suvla Barracks, in Hereford. Display cases cover the early years, the Rifle Volunteers, the Herefordshire Regiment of 1908, the Second World War and the modern period.
