About the museum
Holst Victorian House at 4 Clarence Road in Cheltenham is the birthplace of the composer Gustav Holst, who was born there in 1874. His parents had moved in a few months earlier. His father Adolphus was a musician and teacher who met his future wife Clara when he taught her piano in the house. The museum was formerly called the Holst Birthplace Museum and is run by an independent charity.
The Grade II listed house has four floors and presents the life of a middle-class family in the later 19th century. Restored period rooms include a kitchen centred on a cast-iron range, a sitting room, a drawing room and a bedroom, and a section on the life of the domestic servants. Visitors also learn about Holst’s family, including his great-uncle, the painter Theodor von Holst.
The collection combines Holst’s personal belongings and autograph manuscripts with everyday household objects such as mangles, a soap saver and jelly moulds, as well as paintings and watercolours by Theodor von Holst. A free digital guide for phones can also be used as an audio guide.
