About the museum

Horwich Heritage is a local history society that was formed in 1985. It opened its first heritage centre in 1995 in the Horwich Resource Centre and moved to its present building on Beaumont Road in 2006. The society is a registered charity, has around 300 members and is run by volunteers.

The centre looks at the history of Horwich, the town best known for its railway locomotive works. Over the years its displays have covered subjects such as the Loco Works, a Victorian kitchen, life in the past, the Second World War, and the old mines and turnpike roads on Winter Hill. Monthly open days add further exhibitions on local topics.

The society also keeps archive resources, publishes books and articles about the town, sells films and local publications in its shop, and helps visitors with family history research. It runs talks, walks and trails, and welcomes school parties and other groups.
