About the museum
The Inns of Court and City Yeomanry belongs to a long line of units raised by members of London's legal profession. Its roots reach back to 1584, when members of the Inns of Court pledged to defend Queen Elizabeth I against the Spanish Armada. The Inns of Court Regiment, nicknamed the Devil's Own, later merged with the City of London Yeomanry, and the regiment's modern descendants include 68 Signal Squadron. The unit took back its original name in 2014.
The museum looks after the regiment's heritage and has existed since the 1920s. It is housed at 10 Stone Buildings, within Lincoln's Inn in central London, close to the lawyers who have long supplied many of the regiment's members.
The displays cover the regiment and its predecessor units from the sixteenth century to recent operations in Afghanistan. They include uniforms, weapons, medals and other memorabilia, an archive and objects from the Second World War. A set of drums dating from 1803 is thought to be the oldest complete set in the British Army. Visits and archive searches are arranged in advance through the curator, and school and group visits are welcome.
