About the museum
The Skye Ecomuseum, known in Gaelic as Druim nan Linntean (Ridge of Ages), was created in 2008 by the Staffin Community Trust and is described as the first ecomuseum in Scotland. It has no walls or roof: the exhibits are places in the landscape of Staffin, a crofting community of 23 townships on the north-east coast of the Trotternish peninsula.
The museum presents the area's heritage and natural environment through the stories and experiences of local people. Its sites include the Old Man of Storr (An Stòrr), the Quiraing (Cuith-raing), Flodigarry and a series of lochs, shores and old settlement sites, and the themes range from past land use and wildlife to waterfalls, dinosaur footprints and the traditional way of life. Each site is reached by a short walk, and visitors are asked to come at quiet times to help protect the fragile ground. The project is run by the Staffin Community Trust (Urras An Taobh Sear), which also aims to support the local economy.
