About the museum
The art gallery of the Royal Kennel Club, until 2023 known as the Kennel Club, opened to the public in 2003 and is part of the club's headquarters at 10 Clarges Street in Mayfair. It shows part of the club's collection of dog art and related objects, which is cared for together with a specialist library by the club's culture and heritage team.
The collection covers paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, trophies and other objects from the first century to the present, with a focus on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The oldest object is a Celtic silver coin from about AD 8 to 41 that carries the image of a hound. Other works include a painting of 1670 by the Flemish artist Pieter Boel, the 1855 painting An Early Canine Meeting, which shows the early days of dog showing, and the Keddell Memorial Trophy for Best in Show at Crufts. Artists represented include Maud Earl, Sir Edwin Landseer and Richard Ansdell.
The gallery changes its displays regularly and has staged more than forty exhibitions. Recent shows have highlighted women artists who painted dogs. Visits are by appointment, and guided tours for groups are available.
