About the museum
The Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Society was founded in 1959 by a group of local businessmen who wanted to preserve vehicles of historic interest in the county. Its first vehicle was a former Lincoln Corporation bus, and the collection grew steadily from there, at first stored at Sobaron Barracks on Burton Road.
In the early 1960s the society acquired its present site at Whisby Road. A wooden former NAAFI building went up in 1966 and workshop buildings followed in 1968 and 1969. A new museum building, funded with a grant from North Kesteven District Council, the society and local help, opened in 1993, and the Peart Pilkington Building was added in 2009 and 2010. The museum became a registered museum and gained Accredited status in 2009.
Today the museum is run entirely by volunteers and receives no regular government funding. Its collection of more than 60 vehicles includes buses, cars, vans, fire engines, motorcycles and bicycles, together with road signs, ticket machines, timetables, photographs and uniforms. Some vehicles are roadworthy and appear at special events, and the on-site workshop restores and maintains them.
