About the museum
Llancaiach Fawr is a Grade I listed manor house near Nelson in the Caerphilly area, built in the sixteenth century and later owned by the Prichard family. It is a semi-fortified house with thick walls, enclosed spiral staircases and heavy wooden doors, and was extended in 1628. King Charles I visited the house in August 1645, during the Civil War.
After the family left it became a farmhouse. Rhymney Valley District Council bought it in 1979, restored it in the 1980s and opened it as a museum in the early 1990s. It was run as a living history museum, with costumed interpreters playing the servants of the household and rooms furnished as they would have been in 1645. A Heritage Lottery Fund project between 2013 and 2015 replaced the roof, added a platform lift and restored the attic servants’ quarters.
Caerphilly County Borough Council closed the manor to the public in December 2024 as a cost-saving measure and chose a preferred operator in 2025. As of mid-2026 no lease had been completed and no reopening date has been announced.
