About the museum
The London Bus Museum grew out of private bus preservation in the 1950s and 1960s. A group bought a single-decker, T31, from London Transport in 1956, which is seen as the start of bus preservation in Britain, and the London Bus Preservation Group was formed in 1966 to bring owners together. From 1972 the group kept its vehicles in a former Second World War aircraft factory at Cobham in Surrey, which opened to the public as the Cobham Bus Museum.
The Cobham building decayed, and it was not possible to get permission for proper public access. The trustees therefore sold it and took a long lease on land at Brooklands in Weybridge, next to Brooklands Museum. The new purpose-built museum opened to the public on 1 August 2011 as the London Bus Museum. It is run by the London Bus Preservation Trust, a registered charity and an accredited museum.
The collection covers London road transport from horse-drawn omnibuses of the 1870s to 1890s, through the buses of the 1920s and 1930s and the Second World War period, to Routemasters, Fleetlines and modern electric buses. Visitors can see single-deck buses and coaches, service vehicles and chassis, and many of the vehicles are kept in working order for rides on selected days.
