About the museum

The London Transport Museum Depot in Acton is the museum's large storage warehouse, holding more than 320,000 objects that are not on display at the Covent Garden museum. The collection ranges from small collectables, tickets and signs to whole train carriages and old buses, and includes posters, signalling equipment and station signs.

The depot is not open every day. Visitors can see it on a few ticketed open weekends or open days each year, each with a theme, such as Icons of London in April 2026 and design classics in September 2026, and on guided Depot Discovery tours lasting about two hours. On open days visitors can board historic Underground trains, see the first two Routemaster buses, watch volunteers demonstrate signalling equipment, join curator talks and see rolling stock being restored in the Rail Shed.

The stairlift to the sign collection was out of order at the time of research. The accessible toilet is on the ground floor. Rail tracks and grooves in the floor may be unsuitable for visitors with a visual impairment or mobility difficulties, and most guided tours are accessible to wheelchair users except the Cab-It tour.
