About the museum
The Maeldune Heritage Centre is a community-run heritage and visitor information point on the ground floor of St Peter's Building on Market Hill, the former church of St Peter in the middle of Maldon. Its name uses the Saxon spelling of the town. It is run by the Maeldune Trust, a charitable incorporated organisation, in partnership with Maldon Town Council.
The centre is best known as the home of the Maldon Embroidery, a 42-foot hanging designed by Humphrey Spender that tells a thousand years of the town's story, from the Battle of Maldon in 991 to the unveiling of the work in 1991. The Maldon Society's photograph and film archive can be explored on a touch screen, and a listening station plays local people's memories and stories.
An exhibition hall shows changing work by local artists and groups, with a new exhibition about every three weeks, and a small shop sells crafts made by local makers. Volunteers welcome visitors and also give out tourist information about Maldon and the surrounding district.
