About the museum
The museum was founded in 1922 as an independent charity to collect and preserve the history, traditions and achievements of the regular and volunteer infantry of Worcestershire from 1694 onwards. The Worcestershire Regiment itself was created in 1881 when the 29th Regiment of Foot and the 36th (Herefordshire) Regiment became its first two battalions.
From 1970 the regimental collections were shown at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, where the Worcestershire Soldier gallery opened in 2003. It told the story of the county's infantry over more than three centuries. The gallery closed to the public on 31 August 2025, and its objects have been packed and placed in storage.
The collection includes six Victoria Crosses and records of local families and communities through both world wars and later. With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the UK Government, the museum is working with Worcester City Council, Museums Worcestershire and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum on four new permanent galleries at The Commandery in Worcester, which are expected to open in early 2028.
