About the museum

The museum was the idea of two members of Fulneck Moravian Church, Sr E Harrison and Sr K Mitchell, who decided in 1968 to convert two almost derelict buildings in the settlement. The money came from coffee mornings, donations and 2,000 jars of marmalade. The museum opened in July 1969 and charged 5d for adults and 3d for children.

It is housed in two 17th-century cottages in Fulneck, a Moravian settlement dating from the mid-18th century. Its rooms show the history of the settlement and of the Moravian Church worldwide: a Moravian room with artefacts brought back by missionaries from Labrador and the Himalayas, a Victorian parlour, a fire engine room, a kitchen, a loom room and a costume room.

The museum is run by volunteers and depends on donations from visitors and the Friends of the Museum, on charges for tours of the settlement and on sales in the museum shop.
