About the museum
Mr George's Museum of Time is the private collection of Diana Bell, a watch and clock repairer from Northumberland. She grew up helping her father, George Ellis, in his own repair business and learned her trade from him, and many of the pieces on display were inherited from him. The museum takes its name from the "Mr George the Clock Man" stories that Diana has written.
The museum was founded in Haltwhistle and moved in 2019 to its present home in the centre of Haydon Bridge, a short way from Hadrian's Wall, after the building in Haltwhistle was put up for sale. It is a family-run museum, repair shop and gift shop in one.
The collection covers mechanical watches and clocks, keys, tools and parts from the 18th century to the late 20th century. Many of the clocks and watches are the types that Diana and her father repaired every day, alongside some older and more unusual ones. Visitors who bring in an item for repair can look round the collection while they wait.
