Museum at the Mill

Museum in the former Mossley Mill telling the story of its flax-spinning workers, with archive film, factory tools and thread samples.

Opening hours Café

About the museum

Mossley Mill was a flax-spinning mill and played a major part in the industrial history of Northern Ireland. The site is recognisable by its mill pond and tall factory chimney, which still shape the setting today.

The museum was refreshed in 2023 and now runs through three parts of the building: the reception area, the main stairwell and a museum room on the Lower Ground Floor. Its displays use original objects, photographs, archive film and material from the mill's own archive.

Visitors learn about the daily lives of the people who worked at the mill, how flax was turned into thread, the history of the mill's advertising, the precision tools used in the factory, and samples of the thread and fabric it produced. The mill buildings now serve as the offices of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.
