About the museum
The museum of Soho was established in 1991 as an independent, community-led museum run by volunteers, and is a registered charity. Its aims are to give a safe home to objects and documents about Soho, to record them professionally, to build a database and location guide for the whole collection and to explore digital media for the museum's future.
It collects and shares the stories of one of London's most distinctive neighbourhoods through the memories of people who have lived and worked there, using exhibitions, talks, screenings, oral histories and research projects. Between 2011 and 2018 it also staged talks, screenings and pop-up exhibitions at other Soho venues.
Its gallery and archive space is at 75 Dean Street, in the former Warner Bros and De Lane Lea recording-studio building, which is run as a meanwhile space for artists and start-ups. The premises are currently closed for maintenance and refurbishment until further notice, but the museum's online archive, illustrated Soho timelines and a self-guided Soho Shuffle walking trail remain available.
