About the museum
The museum was founded in February 2023 by Ash William Mills, a historian and collector of magical objects, in a small building in Chalmers Close that was once a 17th-century bishop's cottage. Parts of the original foundations can still be seen. In September 2026 it changed its name from Museum of Magic, Fortune-telling & Witchcraft to Edinburgh Museum of Magic & Witchcraft, because its collection had moved beyond fortune-telling.
The displays aim to raise awareness of the European witch hunts, to show Scotland's folklore and to present the magical heritage of many cultures. Many objects were given by people who wanted to pass on family heirlooms. Visitors can see items such as a 17th-century mummified cat, voodoo dolls and a very old Ouija board, together with divination tools, material on druidic history and modern Wiccan practice, and objects that recall the Scottish witch trials.
Besides the exhibition, the museum runs tarot readings, a monthly tarot group, a shop with handmade gifts and books, and a guided witch walking tour of the Old Town on Saturdays and Sundays.
