About the museum
Musselburgh Museum opened to the public in April 2011, after more than 25 years of campaigning. The Musselburgh Museum Steering Committee was set up as a small voluntary heritage group in 1985 to record, collect and preserve the history of the town. From the early 1990s it had support, advice and storage from East Lothian Council’s museums service, and it put on a major exhibition every year or two.
In 2009 the council asked the group whether it would manage a museum if the council adapted one of its buildings close to the Old Town Hall. The group became the Musselburgh Museum and Heritage Group, a Scottish charity, and today it runs the museum with volunteers.
The permanent displays follow the history of the town from Roman times to the present and cover working, domestic and social life in Musselburgh and the surrounding area. The museum also shows a new themed exhibition each year, drawn from its collection, which has grown from objects and stories brought in by local people.
