About the museum

Nairn Museum was founded in 1858 and is one of the oldest museums in the Scottish Highlands. It is based in Viewfield House, a classic Regency-era building in the heart of the town, and celebrates the history and culture of Nairn and Nairnshire.

The collection ranges from archives to artefacts and reflects local industries, maritime traditions and everyday life. The galleries cover the maritime heritage of Fishertown, the farming roots of the area and the natural landscape of Nairnshire. A military room tells the stories of the battles that shaped the area, from Auldearn and Culloden to the two World Wars.

The museum is an independent charity and a company limited by guarantee, and it is an Accredited Museum. It is run by a single curator-manager and a team of volunteers, receives a small grant from the Highland Council and depends largely on donations. Essential building maintenance is under way, and some galleries are temporarily closed.
