About the museum
Nidderdale Museum was founded in 1975 by local enthusiasts, several of whom had contributed to the 1967 book A History of Nidderdale. The local council offered the group the empty offices of the former rural district council in Pateley Bridge. The building had originally been put up as a workhouse in 1863.
Today the museum holds more than 32,000 objects that illustrate over two hundred years of country life in the dale. Many are shown in original-style settings spread over about a dozen rooms, so that visitors see how people in Nidderdale worked, relaxed and celebrated.
The displays range from a cobbler's shop with its complete contents from about 1820 to a Victorian parlour with a music box, a general store stocked with goods no longer sold, and a school room that invites comparison with school life today. Other themes include farming, local industries such as lead mining and stone, transport, costume and religion.
The museum is run by volunteers and also keeps archives and a reference library for local and family history research, which can be consulted at special research sessions. It won the National Heritage Museum of the Year Award in 1990.
