About the museum

The line from Sheringham to Holt opened on 16 June 1887 and was built mainly to serve holidaymakers. It later became part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, most of which closed in 1959; the section through Sheringham followed in 1964, and the station closed to the public in 1967.

A preservation society had formed after the 1959 closures and moved its stock to Sheringham in 1967. Public passenger trains began in July 1975, and in 1976 the railway took over its own operation under a Light Railway Order. Volunteers cleared and relaid the track to High Kelling in the 1980s, and the line reopened to Holt on 19 March 1989. The Sheringham station site was saved from redevelopment in 2001 with Heritage Lottery funding, and a reinstated level crossing reconnected the line to the national network in 2010.

Today the railway runs about 5¼ miles from Sheringham to Holt, an 11-mile return journey, with steam and heritage diesel trains. Its collection of locomotives, carriages and wagons is maintained by volunteers, and each station is themed on a different decade: Sheringham on 1955, Holt on 1936 and Weybourne on 1910.
