About the museum
Peover Hall was built in 1585 by Sir Randle Mainwaring as an Elizabethan house and is still lived in as a family home. His descendant Sir Henry, the fourth baronet, added a new wing in the 1760s. The Grade I listed Carolean stables date from 1654. The estate was bought by the Peel family in 1919 and about twenty years later by the Brooks family.
During the Second World War the hall served as the headquarters of General George Patton while his troops trained for D-Day, and a prisoner-of-war camp stood in the grounds. A fire started by an American soldier damaged the house, and the Brooks family later restored it.
Visitors see the house on guided tours, which show features such as oak panelling and a long gallery. The gardens include a 500-year-old oak tree and an avenue of pleached lime trees, and the stable yard has been used as a filming location. The neighbouring church of St Lawrence is open on public open days.
