About the museum
The museum occupies a Second World War heavy anti-aircraft battery on the north-east side of the former RAF Predannack airfield on the Lizard peninsula. RAF Predannack became operational in May 1941 as a satellite and backup airfield to RAF Portreath. Anti-aircraft sites such as this protected it from air attack.
The battery follows the 1941 pattern, with gun pits for Vickers 3.7-inch guns, stores for ready-use ammunition and crew shelters. Two Nissen huts on the site may have served as a guard room and a repair shop. The museum describes it as the only wartime heavy anti-aircraft battery that is both preserved and re-armed. Volunteers have cleared the site, restored and repainted the guns and installed new displays.
The collection includes three original wartime heavy anti-aircraft guns, several Bofors light anti-aircraft guns, and other artillery brought from elsewhere, such as a 5.5-inch gun howitzer and a 25-pounder field gun. The former command bunker holds a display on anti-aircraft artillery and the war on the Lizard, and the displays also remember the men and women who served at RAF Predannack. Living history groups and vehicle displays take part in special event days each year.
