About the museum

Radnorshire Museum is a local museum in the centre of Llandrindod Wells that looks after collections relating to the former county of Radnorshire. It is run by Powys County Council as part of the county’s museum service and occupies the former Carnegie public library on Temple Street.

The collections cover a wide range of subjects. The archaeology holds objects from prehistoric to medieval times, among them the Llandrindod Wells log boat, a Sheela-na-gig and finds from the Roman fort at Castell Collen. A palaeontology collection features Ordovician fossils from the Builth–Llandrindod Inlier. The fine art includes works by Thomas Jones, John Opie and Sir Alfred East.

Natural history displays show preserved local wildlife alongside souvenirs from more distant places. The military history collection records the people of Radnorshire who served in the two world wars and life on the home front. Social history material includes a large photographic collection, objects from Llandrindod Wells’s spa heritage, the Kilvert Society collection relating to the Victorian diarist and John Roberts’s Welsh triple harp.
